Business awards success for Ipswich recruitment firm

Ipswich recruitment firm @Work Recruitment has confirmed its outstanding success over the past 12 months by scooping the ‘Start Up Business of the Year’ accolade in the 2009 Anglian Business Awards.

Founded by Ipswich entrepreneurs Michelle Griffiths and Dave Mills, in January 2008, @Work has risen above the recession and quickly established itself as a leader in the field and a champion for local businesses.

The firm launched a temporary division in October last year, specialising in the supply of experienced office and professional staff, to compliment its already succesful permanent divsion. This was followed by the launch of a national Retail division focusing on management positions in July 2009 when the firm also moved to new, larger high street premises in Princes Street, Ipswich. Keen to establish its own identity in a saturated market, @Work has also pioneered a new and unique recruitment tool called ‘eWork’ to provide a cost effective way for local companies to recruit, helping them fight back in the recession.

Michelle Griffiths says: “We are elated to be named Start Up Business of the Year. I’ve always said I like a challenge and one was certainly set by opening our doors at the start of the worst economic downturn we’ve seen in years! By adapting to this tougher climate, however, we have not only survived but thrived and are working hard to help other local businesses fight back and do the same.”

@Work is a strong supporter of the local community and as part of this drive, Michelle is currently involved with a series of employment workshops in conjunction with Suffolk New College under the Government’s Work Skills Programme. Earlier this year Michelle also returned to her former school as a guest adviser for a Dragon’s Den event with Suffolk Chamber of Commerce and Stoke High School’s Young Chamber.

Since start up, @Work has formed alliances with several local clients and suppliers, providing competent staff at competitive prices. The firm’s personable approach to business has helped to boost the local economy and forge long-lasting relationships with clientele.

Michelle concluded: “The past 12 months have been phenomenal for @Work. Our ‘grown-up’ yet quirky approach to recruitment has helped to give us the edge throughout the recession, with more than 80 per cent of new business coming by referral. As we step into the new year we will build on this and continue to champion the local business community which is at the heart of all we do.”

The Anglian Business Awards 2009, sponsored by Archant and Choose Suffolk, received over 100 entrants across 15 categories.
